A slow bathroom sink can wait until Tuesday. Water running where it should not be cannot. The rule we use is simple: if the problem is putting water into your walls, your slab or your floors, or putting sewage back into the house, it is an emergency and it gets an after hours call.
Tampa Bay adds its own wrinkles. Most Pinellas housing sits on slab with copper running underneath, so a supply leak does not always announce itself with a puddle. It shows up as a warm spot on the floor, a water bill that jumped for no reason, or the sound of running water when every fixture is off. Older neighborhoods across St. Petersburg and Dunedin still run original cast iron drain lines, and when those give out the first sign is usually sewage coming up through a shower drain rather than going down it.

Almost every emergency gets smaller if the water stops early, and most people have never had a reason to find their shutoff. Take two minutes now so you are not learning it at midnight.
Inside the house. Look for a valve where the main line enters, usually in the garage, a utility closet, or an exterior wall near the water heater. Turning it clockwise closes it. If it is an older gate valve that has not moved in twenty years, do not force it hard enough to snap the stem.
At the meter. Most Pinellas homes have a meter box in the ground near the sidewalk or the front property line, with a rectangular plastic or concrete lid. Lift the lid and you will see the meter with a valve on the street side of it. A quarter turn with a meter key shuts the whole house down. Keep a meter key in the garage. It costs a few dollars and it is worth it.
One fixture only. If the trouble is a single toilet or sink, there is a small angle stop on the wall behind it. Close that and the rest of the house keeps water.
Water heater. If the tank itself is leaking, close the cold inlet valve on top of the heater, then kill power at the breaker for an electric unit or turn the gas control to off for a gas unit. Do not leave an electric element energised in a draining tank.
